Hi, I don't have any ideas for you, but I can help with the second part of your question...
A bitmap is an image that has been rasterized - Photoshop stores a bitmap image pixel by pixel. A vector is an image that has been stored mathematically - like ClipArt in Word, it can be scaled indefinitely without loss of quality.
You're right - vectors are the more professional approach. But you can still begin by using the text tool, and then right-click on your text layer and choose 'Convert to Shape'
